Filigree heart with ladybird on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A heart outline is built from black ornamental scrollwork and curls, with a small red ladybird sitting at the lower right edge of the heart. The linework is bold and even, and the black ink is set against lightly toned skin on a dark background. The composition is close and centred on the tattoo, with the red insect providing the only colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Tom, The Harvest Fair pulled into Margate Lane on Tuesday and the lads have already started on the Wheel's new seats. You'll laugh, but Dad asked me to do the scrollwork on the gondola backs, the black curls that run round the hearts like bindweed. He says I've got the steadier hand now that the shakes have gone out of my wrist. I took his brushes and sat on an upturned crate for three evenings with a paraffin lamp hung off the rail.

On the Thursday a ladybird walked up the wet paint and stopped right where I'd left the heart open at the bottom. I didn't brush it off. Mrs Okafor from the candy stall says they're lucky if they land on you, and it seemed rude to shift a thing that had picked the job for itself. So I finished the curl around it and let it sit there, red as a pillar box, while the paint dried.

Dad saw it Friday and said no punter would ever ride a gondola with a bug on it. Then the Saturday crowd came in, and a little girl in a yellow mac pointed at the heart and begged her mum for a go. She wanted the one with the beetle. I think I'll keep it there. Come up for the Bank Holiday if you can. Bring your boots, the field's gone to mud, and I'll show you which seat has the ladybird. Love, Nell
