Lamp post and pine trees at night

Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo

A lamp post stands in the centre of a night scene, with a large yellow moon behind it and dark pine trees on either side. A small figure lies at the lower right among the ground details. The bold black outlines and flat yellow fill give the piece a graphic, traditional look, and the design fills the frame against a soft skin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lamp came up again tonight, the first time since the thaw took the lower road. I climbed the ladder at Harrow Gap with the oil can under my arm and the wind pulling at my skirts, and when I struck the match the glass caught and the whole pass went gold, the pines standing either side like old men who have forgotten why they came to the meeting.

Below the bend I saw a shape in the drift. I took it for a sack of feed fallen from a cart, then it lifted an arm. It was Walter Lowe, who drives the salt wagon to Kendal, and he had lain down meaning only to rest his eyes until the cold stopped feeling like a hand on his chest. I shouted, and he did not hear. So I went down the slope with the lantern swinging, and the moon came up over Scarth Fell behind the post, round and yellow as a coin, and it was the moon that finally made him look.

He says he saw the light first, one post standing in the dark with its little window burning, and he thought it a tavern door. I told him it was only a lamp that nobody remembers to thank. We walked up together, slowly, and he kept stopping to look back at the moon over the trees.

Tomorrow I will write to the council about a second oil can. Walter has asked me to keep the glass clean, and I have said I will, though I suspect the lamp needs no one. It has only to be lit.
