Mountain lake scene with sunburst and flower
Traditional · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A circular scene shows two peaked mountains, a sun with radiating dashed rays, pine trees on both banks and a dashed-line lake, framed by leaves and a five-petalled flower with a dotted centre. The linework is bold and solid, with stippled dotwork and gradient shading on the mountains and trees. The tattoo is entirely black and grey and sits centrally on the thigh, with the composition filling a near-oval shape.

You reach the lake before the sun does, and the water is so still that the far peaks hang upside down in it, their snow pointing at your boots. Kalliope sent you with a clay jar and one instruction: bring back the pitch before the sun clears the twin peaks, because after that the resin will not run clean into the seams of the hull.

The pines on the near bank are black in the grey light, darkest where they meet the water and smoky at the crowns, as if someone had rubbed the hillside with soot and a thumb. You wade to the shallows, where the wind off the pass has pressed the surface into short lines, and you realise they are not ripples at all. They are the marks a scribe makes when he counts. Kalliope taught you that sign for sixty oars: a line, a gap, a line, a gap.
The sun breaks between the peaks and throws its rays out like a fan of spears. You dip the jar where the pitch seeps from the black rock, and it comes up in a slow amber thread. On the stone beside you a five-petalled flower has opened, white with a dark seed at its centre. You pick it because your hands are shaking and you need something to hold that is not the jar.
Back at the boatyard, Kalliope pours the pitch into the kettle and stops. She sees the flower in your fist, wilting now, and says nothing for a long while. Then she lays it in the seam with her thumb and smooths the resin over it. By noon the hull is sealed, and the flower lies under the black like a coin under glass, counting the lake for anyone who cares to look.
