Mountain landscape and flower on a thigh

Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A circular design shows two mountains under a rayed sun, with pine trees on both sides and a winding river running through the centre. Laurel leaves curve around the edge and meet a five-petalled flower with a dotted centre at the base. The mountains and sky are shaded with stippled dots, while the trees, leaves and flower use bold solid outlines and dashed lines for the water, all in black ink on pale skin.

The first batch was out of the oven by four, and Halina had the tins on the cooling rack before the kettle boiled. Outside, the yard was still black. She scored the last loaf with three quick cuts, the way her father had taught her, and wiped the blade on her apron.

Her brother rang the bell at the back door at twenty past five, keys in one hand and a folded map he never needed in the other. 'The pass will be under snow by seven,' he said. 'We go now or we wait till Thursday.' She looked at the crates of rolls, the half-empty sack of rye, the flour dust on the windowsill. Then she looked past him at the ridge behind the car park, where a grey line was pulling itself up over the hill like a blind.

They loaded the van without talking. On the drive out, the road climbed between dark pines, and the river ran alongside them, a black ribbon with white dashes where it caught the stones. At the top of the pass the sun came up all at once behind two peaks, its rays fanning across the snow like the spokes of a wheel. Halina wound down the window and the cold came in smelling of resin.

In the first village they pulled into the square. A woman in a dressing gown was already waiting by the shuttered café, arms folded against the chill, and when Halina lifted the tray out, the woman's face opened. 'You came over the top?' she asked. Halina nodded and passed her a loaf, still warm through the cloth. By then the sun had cleared the peaks, and the frost on the cobbles was already turning to water.
