Mountain landscape and eagle on a thigh

Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A black linework mountain range and pine trees sit inside a circular frame, with a bird with spread wings flying above them. Behind the scene, pink and orange mandala patterns suggest a sunset, and small flowers with dangling beads sit below the circle. Black ink forms the main linework and shading, while the pink and orange wash adds colour to the background.

The eagle came back to the lookout every evening, at the minute the sun slid behind Carrow Ridge, and by August I had stopped logging it. Ruth Penhallow had kept this tower for thirty-one years before her knees gave out, and she said the bird was simply checking whether anyone was still awake to watch the light go.

I took the post in her place with a radio, a kettle, and a cardboard box of her notebooks. Her handwriting was small and square. Most entries were smoke sightings and weather: wind north-west, visibility forty miles, one fox on the access track. Then, every few pages, a sketch. Pines standing in a row like teeth. A peak with a notch cut out of its shoulder. Beside the sunsets she had drawn rings, one inside another, the way you would draw ripples on a pond.

In late September a strike came off the far side of the valley, a thin grey column that wandered for two days before it lay down. I was sure I would lose sleep over it. Instead I sat at the sill with her pencil, drawing the ridge in the last of the light, and when the eagle dropped low over the pines I found my hand had made the rings without asking me.

On the final night, the valley crews radioed to say the fire was held. I unhooked the string of glass beads she had hung from the window latch, the ones that clicked whenever the door opened, and packed them into the box with her notebooks. The eagle swung once over the tower and went west. I wrote in the log: last light, clear, no smoke. Then I closed the book.
