Lantern with candle flame on thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A black lantern with ornate scrolled sides and a base sits at the centre of the design, with a bright orange candle flame glowing inside and radiating rays. Bold dark outlines and smooth shading define the metalwork, while green vines, leaves and a purple wash frame the lantern. The tattoo fills the upper thigh and is shown in a close, straight-on crop with the rest of the body cut off.

The lord had sailed over the sea and never come home, and the walls cracked down the middle the spring after. Still the lantern hung from its iron hook above the broken gate, its scrolled sides black with soot. Each evening Maud Harrow climbed out to fill it with tallow and trim the wick. Her son asked her once why she bothered. She said a light in a window tells the road that someone still remembers it.

One November a rider came up the valley with his horse lame and his cloak torn on brambles. He saw the orange glow over the ruin and turned towards it as if drawn on a rope. Maud let him into the courtyard, where vines had dragged the stonework apart and leaves lay thick on the flags. He asked whose light it was. She said it was the castle's, and it had never once gone out.

He stayed until the frost lifted, mending the gate with her son's help. When he left he carried a tin of her tallow down the valley, and the next autumn he came back with a second lantern on his shoulder. They hung it beside the first. From the road, Maud said, the castle looked like a house again.
