Woman portrait with pearls on upper arm sleeve
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large sleeve tattoo shows a stylised woman's face with dark, swirling hair, pearl strands and a decorative hair ornament. Bold black outlines and grey shading model the face, with small touches of pink on the cheeks and a grey wave pattern running down the forearm. The design wraps the upper arm and shoulder and is photographed outdoors against green foliage, with the subject's face cropped out of frame.

Forty-two strands, three of them knotted twice, and every knot was my own work. She sat at the dressing table with her chin lifted, the way she did when the pianist was late, and watched me in the mirror while I threaded the silk.

"You're hesitating, Edna."
"I'm counting, madam. You've lost two since Tuesday."
She laughed, and the laugh slid sideways into a cough, and I saw that the pink she had put on her cheeks was doing more work than it should. Her hair was dressed in the great dark swirls she had worn since the war, pinned with a jewelled comb, and her eyes were ringed with kohl that ran at the edges when she was tired. Through the door the stage manager was shouting for the second act.
"Leave the last string loose," she said. "I'll wear it that way tonight. Let them wonder whether it's the pearls that are cheap or the girl."
I tied the knot anyway, pulled it tight, and set the strand in her palm. She closed her fingers over it, stood, and walked out into the light without looking back, as if the room had never been hers to keep.
