Large floral tattoo on upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large floral tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder, centred on two big blooms that look like peonies or camellias, with a smaller open flower, thin stems and leaves. The linework is fine and the petals are built up with soft grey shading and fine stippling, giving them volume. The design is entirely black and grey and fills the frame diagonally, with a partial wall sign visible in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The gardener's widow at Harrowby Cross had two daughters and one bed of camellias, and she loved the bed more than either girl, which the village said was no sin since the camellias never once asked her for bread. Every March the blooms came out heavy and pale as wet paper, and every March she cut the best of them for the church and left the rest to brown on the stems.

The older girl, Ada, went up the hill road to work in the big house kitchens when she was fourteen and did not come back for nine years. The younger, Nell, stayed and tended the bed with her mother, learning which stems would take a graft and which would only sulk. When the mother died in a hard frost, Nell found a peony root wrapped in oilcloth under the potting bench, a thing no one in Harrowby had ever planted, and she set it at the bed's edge without knowing why.
Ada came down the hill in the thaw with a bundle of clothes and a cough. She walked straight past the house to the garden and stood there a long while, looking at the white camellias crowding the old wall and the new peony shouldering up beside them, its leaves already the grey-green of a fox's back. Then she knelt, pulled a single bloom, and held it under her nose the way their mother used to.
Nell came out with the trowel. "You'll want a bed of your own," she said. Ada laughed for the first time in years and said the ground was big enough for two, if they were both willing to be sharp about the weeds.
