Large sunflower and cherubs across a full back tattoo
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
A woman with short blonde hair is photographed from behind, showing a large tattoo across her entire back. A big sunflower dominates the centre, with smaller sunflowers, a blue sky with soft clouds, and two cherub figures at the lower edge. The shading is soft and painterly, with warm oranges and yellows set against blues and muted greens, on a mottled brown and green backdrop.

Sit closer, you lot, the fire's only good for the front row. Now, I'll tell you about Ada Frood, who travelled with Pilcher's Marvellous Show the summer the big wheel came off its axle at Hexham. She was the sign-painter, not the strongman, and she had a rule: never paint what you haven't stood under.

So when the old showman asked her for a sky for the Wonder Tent, she took her brushes out to the field behind the lorries and lay on her back in the stubble for three days. Blue went on first, then the clouds, grey-pink at the bellies where the sun had been. A sunflower grew up out of the corner of the canvas because the farmer's wife had given her one, and she could not bear to leave it in a jar.
On the last evening the cherubs arrived, though nobody had sent for them. Two plump brothers who had been stealing cake from the refreshment stall came to sit on the painted hedge to watch her work, and she painted them as they were, sticky-fingered and bored. The showman swore he would pay her in full only if the cherubs came out. She refused. He paid her anyway, because the sunflower was the only thing in the tent that didn't wilt by Sunday.
Here's the strange part. When the fair packed up for winter, the canvas was rolled and forgotten in a barn near Carlisle, and the children who found it years later said the sunflower turned to face the door every morning. Ada never went back. I think she had got what she wanted: a sky you could walk out of, and two little thieves who had nowhere else to be.
