Sunflower field tattoo across a woman's back

Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo

A woman is photographed from behind, with a large sunflower tucked into her hair and her hands resting on her shoulders. Her back is covered by a painterly tattoo of big sunflowers in full bloom, smaller flowers and a field, set under a blue sky with soft clouds. The shading is smooth and the palette of yellow, orange, teal and blue is vivid against a warm, mottled green and brown backdrop.

Mind the kettle, Dolly, it's still hot, and sit where the draught can't reach you, because this is the part where my knees start to complain. You want the field? Right. Sunflowers, acres of them, on the high ground above Pennick, where the wind comes off the Channel with nothing to stop it but the hedges.

Ada Fenwick ran that field after her father died, and she ran it badly, by all accounts, because she would not sell it. The rest of the village wanted the land for bungalows. Ada wanted yellow. Every August she planted another row out of pure contrariness, and every August the heads turned after the sun the way they do, so that by noon the whole field faced the same way like a congregation at the back of a church.

The summer I'm telling you about, the drought came, and the sky went white for six weeks with not a cloud in it. The heads hung down like wet washing. Ada stood at the gate every evening with her arms folded, glaring up. Then one Tuesday a bank of cloud came in off the water, slow and blue-grey as a bruise, and she laughed out loud in the lane so that the postman dropped a letter in the ditch.

She never did sell. When the rain had soaked the field through and the sun came back, the sunflowers all lifted their faces east, toward the sea the rain had come from, and they stayed that way. The one by her gate still wears a bloom the size of a dinner plate, and her nephew says it's never once turned to face the road. Nobody has had the heart to cut it down.
