Large X symbol on top of a foot
Other · Mixed · Photo
A large, bold letter X in solid black sits on the top of a foot, with a soft green halo of shading around its edges. The black areas are dense and even, while the green fades outward into the lighter skin. The foot fills most of the frame against a clear plastic sheet, with the image cropped close around the tattoo.

The snow came early that year and stayed past Candlemas, and by the second week of January the beck had frozen so hard the Hollin ewes walked across it without looking down. Ada Crake's father had always said the pale green glow on the old alder stump was foxfire, the cold light that rises from rotten wood when the ground beneath is sound. He said it the way other men said grace, and she never thought to doubt him until the night she went out with a lantern and found the stump glowing through the drift like a lamp left burning in an empty house.

She fetched the tar pot and a stick of charcoal from the range, climbed onto the byre roof in the dark, and scorched a large X into the flat stone above the door. Her brother Tom called it foolishness. Her mother said nothing and kept the kettle on, and in the morning she watched the mark from the kitchen window as though it might move.
When the thaw came in February the beck ran black and high, and the path to the lower pasture vanished under water. Ada took the ewes by the only ground still firm, the strip the glow had shown her at each dusk, while Tom followed behind with the cart, cursing every step. Where the light ran out she counted the lambs by touch, one hand on each woolly back, and not one went under.
By Lady Day the lower field was green again and the stump had sunk into the mud where it belonged. Tom never admitted the X had done anything. Ada left it on the byre stone anyway, square and black and softened at the edges by the weather, and every winter after she went out at dusk to see whether the old light had come back.
