Small line symbol on the inner wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of the inner wrist, with fingers curled in at the top of the frame. A small black symbol made of a diamond outline with crossing strokes sits near the centre of the wrist. The linework is thin and solid, with no shading, and the plain background is soft and yellow-green.

The lens came north in October, packed in straw inside three crates that the steamer left on the slipway at Ardnish with the tide already turning. Nobody else on the rock would touch it, so you knelt in the wet grass and unwrapped each prism yourself. There were ninety-six, every one cut to a small diamond and set in brass, and behind each diamond two fine bars crossed like the strokes a child makes when it has just learned to write its own name.

The trouble was the crossing. A letter from the Commissioners' office, signed by a Mr Pryce who had never once seen the sea from the gallery, said the bars would scatter the beam into the fog and must be ground away before the first winter gale. You wrote back that the glass was sound and the fault lay in the mounting. Then you sent the boy across to the mainland with the reply and spent the next three nights climbing the tower to turn the cage by hand, lamp unlit, feeling for the place where the light went wrong.
On the fourth evening the wick caught and the beam came out through the ninety-six diamonds and broke into a fan of small bright shapes that crossed the water, the cottage wall, the drying nets and the faces of the boats coming in from the Sound. Old Morag stood at the foot of the path with her shawl over her head and counted them out loud, and when she got to ninety-six she laughed.
Pryce's next letter said the beam was satisfactory and the matter closed. You put it in the drawer with the tide tables and never told him that the crossed bars were the one part of the lens that had been your own idea.
