Interlocked knot circle on the foot
Geometric · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of four interlocking loops arranged in a ring sits on the side of a bare foot, with the toes visible above it. The linework is bold and even, with solid black fill and no shading or grey tones. The design is centred on the skin against a plain, warm-toned background.

The ferryman's daughter at Hollin Wood had four rope ends and no patience for tying them. Every spring the village brought her its broken nets, and every spring she sat on the mossy stump by the water and knotted them back together, loop through loop, until nothing could tell where one cord stopped and the next began.

One grey morning a stranger came down the track with a cough and a clay pot wrapped in sacking. He asked whether the knots would hold a bridge, or a promise, or a man's life through a bad winter. She told him they would hold anything she had the patience to finish, and that patience was the only price. He paid her in salt and a song about a heron, and she tied the heron's song into the hem of her shawl so it would not get away.
The winter after, the river rose over the lower ford and took two barrows and a cow. The stranger's cough had gone to the lungs by then, and the village said he had walked out into the flood to fetch a child. The girl sat up three nights with a fresh length of cord, working the loops tight and even, the way she had been taught. When the water dropped she walked to the ford and tied the ring around the post where the children crossed, four loops that went round and back on themselves and never came undone.
They still cross there, and the wood has grown back over her stump. If you put your hand flat on the post you can feel where the cord was pulled through, smooth as a bead, and nobody in Hollin has ever found the ends.
