Laters, baby lettering on lower back

Lettering · Back · Colour · Photo

The tattoo reads 'Laters, baby', with 'Laters' in a serif capital and lowercase face and 'baby' in a looping cursive script that ends in a small flourish. The ink is a single dark red-brown with solid, even lines and no visible shading. A hand with pale, French-tipped nails rests above the text, and dark fabric and a light blue towel fill the lower part of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Marchbank had been at Seaview House for eleven days, and in that time he had said the same thing to everyone who would listen. Cheerio, he told Mrs Pilcher over the porridge. Ta-ra, to the postman. Then, with a wink that never quite landed, he tipped his hat and added the words he believed made him sound like a film star: laters, baby.

On the last morning he came down the stairs with his case bumping every step. Dolly Frayne was waiting in the hall with a stack of blue striped towels against her hip, because Mrs Pilcher had said the new guest in number six would want them aired, and Dolly was not to stand about gawping at the sea. Marchbank stopped beside her, eyed the towels as if they were old friends, and opened his mouth.

'Laters, baby,' he said. The words hung in the damp hall, which smelled of brine and Brasso.

Dolly had heard it forty times. She had heard it from the lad who mended the boiler and from a sailor who never paid his bill. She set the towels on the newel post, took a breath, and gave it back to him flat and perfect, the way Mrs Pilcher said the vicar's wife said things. 'Laters, Mr Marchbank.' Then, because the sea was loud through the open door and nobody else was listening, she added, 'Mind the step.' He went down the steps two at a time into the wind, and the door swung shut behind him on its slow hinge. Dolly gathered the towels, climbed to number six, and found the window already open, the bay bright and rough beyond it.
