Cursive script line across a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a line of thin, handwritten-style cursive lettering tattooed diagonally across a bare shoulder, with the words reading down from the top edge of the shoulder towards the upper arm. The linework is fine and even, in dark ink with no shading, and the words are only partly legible in this angle. The skin is warm-toned and lit from the upper left, with a blurred background of a chair and a pale wall.

The lift in Harrow House has been dead since March, so you take the stairs with the shopping hooked on one arm, counting landings the way other people count sheep. On the ninth floor someone has taped a notice to the wall in a cursive hand, looping and careful, asking whoever took the ramp key to please bring it back. You stop to read it twice. In a block where every other notice is printed in capitals and shouting, this one seems written by someone who expects to be read slowly.

That will be Ruth Adeyemi from 9C, whom you have known for six years mostly through paper. There have been notes about the bins, a birthday card slipped under your door with a ten pound note and the words "Get yourself a cake, love." Her lines always climb and then drop, as if the pen gets tired and keeps going anyway. She never uses full stops. She just runs the words together and trusts you to find the breaks.
The following Tuesday there is a new notice at knee height, and it is not about the lift. It says only: "Tell the young man from 14 the kettle's on if he wants to come up." Nobody on fourteen is young, and nobody on fourteen has a visitor. You climb the last flight with the shopping knocking against your leg. Ruth's door is open a crack, the hallway light is on, and taped to the frame is a sheet of paper that begins, halfway down, with the words "come up slow, I've been keeping the good biscuits."
