Ada Penhallow had painted lettering on the hulls of six ships, and she had never once been asked to paint a motto that wasn't already printed on a tin. So when Captain Mott handed her a scrap of paper on the quay at Falmouth, with three words scrawled across it in his brother's hand, she read them twice before she believed them. Live. Laugh. Love. The Marigold was a coaster bound for Lisbon and Montreal, and her new owner wanted those words along the wheelhouse rail, in a hand that looked as if it had been written by someone who'd had a drink or two.

She spent the first night sketching. Flourishes were the difficulty. A square brush would give her block capitals, and the brother wanted something that leaned, like a line of washing in a wind. She settled on a pointed sable and a pot of enamel gone slightly thick in the cold, and she let the loops run long, joining each word to the next so the sentence would read as one breath. On the third morning, with the Atlantic already grey beyond the breakwater, the first letter went down clean.
Somewhere past the Azores the paint started to lift in the damp. Mott leaned over the rail, watched her touch up the L with two fingers pressed to the wood to steady them, and said nothing for a long while. Then he asked whether the old man who'd commissioned the job had known how it ended. Ada said she didn't think anyone ever knew that. He nodded as though that settled it.
They made Lisbon with the words bright and the rail still warm from the sun. Ada climbed down the gangway with a rag in her pocket and a feeling she couldn't name, and when she looked back up, the last loop of the final e was catching the light like a pen stroke still wet.
