Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two lines of numerals and symbols, one reading N 35 55' 2.69" and the other W 80 29' 32.04", set in a bold, typewriter-style font. The ink is solid black with clean edges, and the text runs horizontally across the upper back near the shoulder blade. The photograph is a close, slightly warm-toned selfie-style shot that also shows a striped top and part of the wearer's long hair.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The surveyor came up the Tarrant road in March with a brass theodolite strapped to a mule, and he would not say why he wanted the old orchard. Mrs Ada Pell gave him tea in the scullery and watched him take his readings through the kitchen window. He drove an iron pin into the ground beneath her pear tree, wrote two lines in a green notebook, and rode off without finishing the tea.

Her granddaughter Nell was nine and had no patience for grown-up sums. She copied the figures onto the back of an empty seed packet, fifty-five minutes north and twenty-nine minutes west, because the surveyor had said they were the way home for anyone lost in the county. Nell kept the packet in her pinafore pocket all that summer, through the hay and the blight and the long walk to the chapel school.

When the river rose in October and the lanes went under, Nell's father did not come back from the cattle market. Ada sent the girl out with a lantern and told her to find the pin under the pear tree and stand on it. Nell did as she was told. The wind dropped, and across the flooded meadow a single lamp came swinging towards her, steady as a plumb line.

Her father said afterwards that he had only followed the numbers in his head, the way a man follows a hedge in the dark. The pin is still under the pear tree, rusted to the colour of the soil. The seed packet is soft as cloth now, and the digits on it can still be read if you hold it up to the window.
