Every spring the goatherd's daughter climbed the stony ridge above Amarin to cut lavender before the bees found it. Her grandmother said the sprigs had to be taken the same morning the dew lifted, or the scent would stay up in the hills and never reach the houses. So Mirra went up in the grey light with a knife wrapped in a rag and a basket on her hip, and she came down each year with stems so thick the basket would not close.

One spring the grey light came late, and a stranger was sitting on the wall at the top of the ridge. He had a feathery sprig of rosemary tucked behind one ear, and he was peeling the petals from a wild mallow one at a time, counting them under his breath. He asked why she bothered with lavender when the mallow was so much prettier. Mirra said the lavender kept moths out of the winter wool. He said the mallow kept nothing out, and that was why it had outlasted every shepherd in the valley.

She cut her stems anyway and went down. The village was quiet when she reached it. The old woman at the well told her the goats had come home alone, their bells untied and lying in the grass. Mirra understood then that she had been talking to the hill itself. She hung the lavender by the door, and the next morning the bundle had opened two flowers at its heart, five pale petals each, and she never again cut a stem without leaving one behind.
