A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Myrto knelt in the dust behind her uncle's apothecary on the Canopic Street, a knife in one hand and a bundle of grey-green sprigs in the other, counting cuttings under her breath. Seven for the physician's order, he had said. Seven, not eight, because the eighth was not for sale, and her uncle had no patience for sentiment in a shop that weighed bitter roots in bronze.

The plant had come up from the hills above Pelusium in a clay pot wrapped in wet linen. The root she had split the week before had sent up two stems from one crown, one tall and straight, the other leaning toward the courtyard wall as if it wanted to see the street. Each stem bore its leaves in pairs, narrow and pointed, thinning toward the tip. She cut the straight stem clean at the node and left the leaning one in the earth, where no one would think to look.

Kallias the physician came out at noon, turned a sprig over in his fingers, and frowned at the leaves. They had lost their smell in the heat, he said. Myrto told him the roots had been moved too late in the season. He did not argue. He paid in silver and was a copper short, and she did not correct him.

That evening she filled a cracked jar with river water, set the spare stem inside it, and scratched her own name into a scrap of papyrus to tuck beneath the rim. By the new moon the stem had put out two shoots from its base, and the leaves were opening in pairs along its length. She moved the jar to the sill where the morning light could find it, and left the shutter open for the thin shadow it threw across the wall.
