Lavender sprig on the inner forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A single lavender sprig runs diagonally along the inner forearm, with a fine green stem tapering into narrow leaves and a cluster of purple flower buds at the lower end. The linework is delicate and the purple petals are softly shaded with lighter and darker tones. The plain light grey background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Ivy,

I have been meaning to write since the Saturday at the Palais, when you stood by the cloakroom with your gloves in one hand and a sprig of lavender in the other, pretending you had not been waiting for me. The band was still playing 'Moonlight Serenade' through the wall, and your hair smelt of the stuff, sharp and sweet, the way the lane behind the market smells in July.
I should explain about the lavender. Mr Harcourt's field out past Mitcham has gone purple this year, the whole slope of it, and he let me cut a bundle for the stall if I promised to sell it before the rain. I sold eleven bunches on Tuesday and kept back one stem for you, the longest one, with the leaves still on. I tied it with a bit of green wool from my mother's basket so it would not shed on your coat.
Don't laugh, but I've been carrying the little thing about in my top pocket all week. The flower heads have gone papery at the tips, and the stem has bent a touch where it sat against my chest. I thought about pressing it in the Bible, then thought better of it, because you would only tell me it was foolish to keep a dead flower when there were live ones on the hill.
So here is my proposal, if you can call it that. Come out to Harcourt's with me on the first Sunday of August, bring the good shoes, and we will cut our own. If you say no, I shall still come to the Palais on Saturday and ask you to dance, and you can tread on my feet as often as you like.
Yours, with lavender on my hands still, Walter
