Lavender sprig on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A slender lavender sprig with purple flower spikes and thin green stems runs diagonally along the forearm. The linework is delicate, with soft shading inside the purple blooms that gives them some depth. The palette is limited to purples and greens against pale skin, with open space around the design.

Dear Mags,

The lavender arrived on Tuesday in a hessian sack that smelt of somewhere I have never been, and I have spent every morning since trying to tame it. Ted says I am overdoing the sugar. He is probably right, but the shortbread has to taste of July even when it is February and the shop window is still black at quarter past four.

Yesterday I stripped the flower spikes from their stalks with my thumb and fingers, the way you showed me with the rosemary, and the purple came off on my knuckles like a bruise that would not fade. I folded the buds into the butter and the sugar and watched the dough go faintly grey-violet. It looked like nothing much until it came out of the oven, pale and gold at the edges, and the whole back room smelt of the hedgerow behind your cottage.

There was one long sprig left over, the longest I had seen, with a bit of green stem still on it and two narrow leaves curling away as if they wanted to leave. I did not have the heart to bin it. I laid it on the cooling rack beside the first tray, and when Ted came in at half five he stood there a long moment, said nothing, and went to light the second oven.

I have kept it pressed in the back of the recipe book, between the pages for your Victoria sponge. Come at Easter. The flour is still on everything, and the window is going grey over the car park, which is my favourite minute of the day.

Love, Dee
