The lavender came in early this year, before the wind turned, so Mam and I cut the top rows on the Tuesday and hung the bundles in the barn where you used to hide from chores. The bees are still drunk on it. Mrs Gorrie says the purple will hold until the frost, but she says that about everything.

Last night the moon came up over the north field, nearly full, and I took the lamp out to the old well stones to look at it properly. There was a ring around it, the faintest dotted line, as if someone had tried to draw the sky with a pin. I stayed out until the dew soaked through my stockings. Out here the moon doesn't wait for the mainland to finish its business. It just rises and sits on the sea as though it owns the place.

The rowan by the slipway has gone red at the tips, and its berries are coming in green and black and a teal blue I have never seen on anything else. Dad always said those were the island's own colours, and that you could tell a true islander by the tint of the berries on his cuffs. I laughed at him. I'm not laughing now.
