Lavender sprigs on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A botanical design of several lavender sprigs with purple flower spikes and thin green stems, running diagonally up the inner forearm. The linework is soft and painterly, with shading in the purple blooms and tonal variation in the green leaves. The arm is shown against a pale yellow-green wall, with the hand open and a ring on one finger.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The miller's son had asked three times, and three times Marguerite had sent him back down the lane with a basket of eggs and no answer. On the fourth morning he came up the hill with his cap in his hand and found her cutting lavender along the wall, the heads already grey at the tips from the heat.

'You will have to cut every stem before I say yes,' she told him, and handed over the shears. He worked until the bells rang for noon. Each sprig he cut he tied with a green rush, thin as a hair, the way his mother tied hay. By the time he finished his arms were scratched to the elbow and the bundle stood taller than he did.

She carried it into the drying shed and hung it upside down from the beam. 'Lavender keeps a house quiet,' she said. 'It keeps moths out of wool and quarrels out of kitchens. Bring me a year of hands like these and I will marry you.' He said he would, and he did. The wedding was in the autumn, when the stems had dried to the colour of old bruises and the whole village smelt of them.

The next spring Marguerite walked up to the wall and found the bushes had put out fresh spikes in the night, purple as a bruise coming up through the grey. Her husband was already kneeling in the dew with the shears, humming, his sleeves pushed up past the scratches. She did not ask him what he thought he was doing. She only took the second pair of shears from the hook and knelt down beside him.
