Puff flower and leaves on a calf

Botanical · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A spiky, puff-shaped flower sits at the top of a branch of pointed leaves that trails down the calf. The fluffy flower head is built from fine dotwork stippling, while the leaves and stems use clean fine linework with some shading along the leaf veins. The design is in black and grey on pale skin against a plain dark background, centred on the leg.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The mule had stopped again at the cairn above Carrow Gap, and no amount of Dad's whistling would shift it. I got down on my knees in the thin snow to see what the animal wanted. It wasn't the wind it feared. Between two boulders a shrub had pushed out a single head of flowers, fluffed out like a shaving brush and threaded with pink, and the mule kept shoving its nose into it.

Dad said the thing was a powder puff and that the carters brought the seed up from the lowland towns, where the air stays soft enough for it to flower. Nobody had planted it on the pass. It had come up in a crack in the granite, a few pointed leaves at a time, each one folded like a blade to keep the frost off. He called it a fool's plant and said the pass had no room for anything that didn't earn its keep. Still, he didn't stop me when I snapped off a branch and tucked it into the mule's bridle.

We reached the hut after dark, and I left the sprig on the table by the stove. Dad pushed it aside twice to make room for the kettle. By morning the flower had closed its head against the cold, the leaves curled in over it like fingers round a coin.

When I came back up the path in spring, the boulders were wet and the cairn had fallen. The shrub was there, three times the size, and the mule was grazing beside it with its eyes half shut. Dad had carved a notch in the nearest stone and filled it with a little water from the stream, the way you'd leave something out for a guest who was late.
