Leafy vine tattoo on wrist and forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests on dark denim while a black leafy vine tattoo wraps from the inner wrist up the forearm. The thin, even outlines form small pointed leaves, curling tendrils and a single trailing stem, with some light shading inside the leaves. The tattoo is in black ink on pale skin and sits against a dark fabric background, with the hand and forearm framed diagonally.

Dear Marguerite,

The rain has not let up since Tuesday, and the stallholders on Hadley Street have taken to sheltering under the awnings of the fishmonger, which is how I came to meet the vine woman. She sells cuttings from a barrow by the old chapel, wrapped in wet newspaper and tied with garden string. I bought a sprig of ivy off her for the kitchen windowsill, and she told me, without my asking, that a vine will find its way up any wall if you give it a single nail to hold.
I have thought about that all week. You will laugh, but I went back on Thursday with a half crown in my glove and asked her what she would charge to write something on the back of my hand. She said she had no pen, only a needle and a little pot of soot, and that the price was an honest answer to one question. I asked her which question. She said, "Is there anyone you have been holding up?" I said no, and she looked at me the way Mother used to look at a loaf that had risen wrong, and told me to come back when I had thought about it properly.
So I have been thinking. I keep coming back to the Pemberton boy, who lodged above the ironmonger's and brought me a sack of runner beans every September until the summer he left for Canada without a word. I am not sure he was ever the one who needed holding.
The rain is coming through the gutter again. I will post this before the last collection and tell you the rest when you are home.
Yours in damp boots, Edith
