Lion head tattoo on inner wrist

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A black lion head with a flowing mane is shown on the inner wrist of a hand held up against a green knitted cloth and a magazine. The lion is drawn in bold, clean black outlines with little shading, and a small pink heart sits just above it. The composition is a close, slightly angled shot with the hand filling the frame and a soft, blurred background.

The year my grandmother was young, a boy from the valley below named Tamas climbed up with a broken heart and a pocketful of rose quartz he meant to leave for a girl who had married a cooper. He sat at the spring to cry. The lion came, lay down beside him, and waited until he was done. Then it nudged the stone from his palm with one great paw and carried it in its teeth back into the rocks, as if it had something to answer.

Next morning the boy found the stone set on a flat slab at the spring's edge, the pink heart of it cracked clean in two, and beside it a single black hair the length of his forearm. He went down the mountain lighter than he came up. Some say the lion only wanted a bit of company. I say a lion that will carry your sorrow off in its mouth has a heart of its own, and so, I suppose, does the mountain.
