Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black arrow tattoo sits on the inner wrist and forearm of a pale arm resting on a grey knitted jumper. The arrowhead is an outlined triangle with a stepped chevron shaft, and the fletching is built from layered angular feathers. The ink is solid black against light skin and a soft, textured grey background.

Thirty years after the Sallow Lane leavers went their separate ways, Mrs Pender set out the urns in the village hall and waited for them to come back. She had no list of who would arrive first, so she counted arrows instead. Each child had shot one from the schoolyard butts on the last afternoon of term, a plain ash shaft with three grey feathers, and each had been told to keep it until the day they met again.

The first to come was Tobias Renn, who had walked up from the coast with his arrow tucked inside his coat. He laid it on the trestle table and everyone leaned in. The head was an outlined triangle, the shaft notched in steps like a stair, and the feathers stacked in layers, dark against the pale wood. Nobody remembered them looking so sharp. "The river took mine," said Ada Lowe, and she pulled a bent stub from her bag, its feathers gone to nothing.

Then the orchard door banged, and Pender's granddaughter came in dragging a long arrow that had stuck in the old pear tree since the summer of the flood. The wood had silvered, but the feathers were still whole. Pender ran her thumb down the shaft and found, cut small at the nock, the mark her husband had made for every child who ever stood at the butts: one notch for each year they meant to stay away. The steps were full of them. Nobody had told the children that. She counted them twice, and the number came out right.
