Leafy vine wrist band tattoo
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black vine with small leaves and tiny five-petal flowers wraps around the inside of the wrist in a narrow band. The linework is fine and even, with solid black leaves and dotted accents, and the design is shown in black ink only. The wrist is photographed against a grey textured wall, with light denim jeans and a pale top at the edge of the frame.

The bell for Sext had already gone when you found Brother Ambrose kneeling in the physic garden with his sleeves pushed to the elbow, glaring at a thin green vine that had crept off the south wall overnight. You were meant to be carrying water to the novices' beds, not standing among the bean rows while an old man argued with a plant.

"It has no business here," he said, without looking up. The vine had found the iron gate and run along its top rail, threading through the bars and coming out the far side in a neat, looping band. Small leaves grew in pairs along its length, dark as ink where the sun missed them, and at the joints tiny five-petalled flowers had opened overnight, pale and smaller than a fingernail. Brother Hilary planted the first cutting forty years ago, Ambrose told you, carried in his sleeve over the fells from a house that no longer stands. Every prior since had wanted it gone, and every prior had gone on wanting it.
The prior wanted the south wall clear for the new drain, so the vine had to go. Ambrose handed you the shears and showed you where to cut: everywhere except the gatepost, where the stem wrapped twice around the stone and had grown into the old iron ring. "Cut too close to that and it bleeds sap for a week and dies," he said. "Leave a little, and it will remember where it was." You snipped the runners one by one until the wall was bare brick and the leaves lay on the path like scraps of a letter nobody would finish.
At Vespers the prior came through the gate, stopped, and looked at the single green band still circling the post, its flowers open in the evening light. He said nothing about the drain. He only laid his hand on the cold iron, carefully, as if it were something that might wake.
