Then Pearl stepped in and said if he drowned that animal she would walk out and take the whole ladies' orchestra with her.

The cat is called Whisk, after the moustache. Three lines each side, dark as a pen nib, and a little nose like a button of coal. I have been drawing him on the backs of cloakroom tickets for weeks so the girls have something to smile at when the queue goes round the block. Tonight he sat on the counter and let a sailor scratch behind his ears while I counted coats.

Something in the way he watched the revolving door made me look up, and there was a young man in a demob suit, very still, staring at the cat as if he had seen a ghost. He asked if the cat had a name. I said Whisk. He said his mother's cat was called that, back in Hull, before the house went. He had a scrap of paper folded in his wallet, and when he opened it I saw my own drawing, the one I did on a ticket for little Sheila last spring. Her mother must have given it to him.

I have written his address on the back of that ticket and I am posting it tomorrow. Come Saturday and help me hold the sack, if Haskins tries again. Love, Edie
