Solid black silhouette tattoo of a figure leaning forward with long hair and a dark jacket, placed on the calf.

Leaning figure silhouette tattoo on a calf

Calf · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is a solid black silhouette of a figure leaning far forward at the waist, with long wavy hair falling over the face and one leg raised behind. Details such as the jacket seams and a thin light stripe down the trouser leg are left as negative space within the black fill. The design sits on the outer side of a lower leg against a pale skin tone, with a tiled floor and white trainers visible in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cutout had to lean further than any sane carpenter would allow, and Dessie Malone spent the whole of Tuesday night with his jaw set against the plywood, sanding the shoulder back until the hinge sat true. Mrs Okafor from the parish council had sketched it on the back of a bus timetable. 'Lean him like he's trying to pick up a coin with his nose,' she said. He couldn't picture it, so he stood in the wings of the Corn Exchange and leaned himself, badly, until his back cracked.

Paint was the difficulty. Matt black for the coat and the hair, which had to fall over the face like wet rope, and a single strip of white gloss down the left trouser leg so the figure would read from the back row. Dessie cut the jacket seams into the fill with a craft knife, one line at a time, because the lighting man wanted the shape to hold even when the stage went dim. Every seam he left as bare board made the thing look more like a person and less like a shadow.

On opening night the raised leg caught the spot and the whole hall went quiet, then someone near the back laughed the way people do when they are moved and would rather not say so. Dessie didn't stay for the second half. He stood out in the car park with a flask, watching the fire door.

Afterwards, when the hall was swept and the chairs stacked, he found the cutout still propped against the stage left wall where the crew had left it. The lean had taken a little of the wall's damp, and a thin crack ran up the hinge. He pressed the joint back with his thumb, and the figure bent a fraction further, as if it had only been waiting for someone to notice it was still tired.
