Figure with outstretched arms on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo of a full-length figure in a sweater and dark trousers stands with both arms stretched wide and hair blowing back. The linework is fine and clean, with simple shading on the trousers and shoes. The tattoo sits centrally on the front of a thigh against a plain light background, with the wearer's shorts visible at the top of the frame.

Dear Tomas,

The Ministry of Weights has sent another man up the Orrin pass to count the goats, and he has counted them twice, which is more than he ever managed with the sheep. I write so you know the kingdom of Halvarra is still going on without you, and that your sister is still the only person in the valley who isn't afraid of the wind.

Mother says I am to stop standing on the parapet at Cold Gate. She says the gusts will take me into the lake and the lake will not give me back. I told her the lake has never once wanted anything from me, and that the wind only wants to hold my arms out for a moment before it lets go. So each evening after the bell I climb up, shake out my plait, and stand with both arms flung wide until my shoulders burn and the jumper I knitted last winter fills like a sail.

Last Tuesday the clerk from the Ministry was below in the square, watching me with his ledger open. I did not stop. I think he wrote something down, because the next morning two officers came asking whether a girl had been seen on the wall doing anything unseemly. I told them I was practising for the midsummer fair, which is true, since the wind is the only dancer in Halvarra who never misses a step.

Come home before the thaw. Bring the good scissors. I have a sheet of old map I want to cut into kites, and I need someone to hold the other end of the string.

Your loving sister, Ilse
