Sitting cat outline seen from behind
Black and grey · Flash
A single bold black outline shows a cat seen from behind, sitting upright with pointed ears, whiskers on one side and a long tail curving out to the right. The linework is smooth and uniform with no shading or fill, leaving the interior white. The cat is centred on a plain white page with generous margins around it.

Sit down where the wind can't get at your neck, and don't look at her face when she turns round, because she never turns round. That's the first thing you learn about the cat at Dunmore Wells. She sits on the wall with her back to the road, ears pricked at the empty dust, and the whole town says she's watching for the Halloran lorry.

Old Mrs Ferrier kept the petrol station then, and she swore the cat came with the pumps. Every evening the sun dropped behind the mesa and the cat's tail would lift, just the very tip of it, curling out like a question. Lorry drivers would wave at her. Nobody ever waved back, which is how you know she was a proper cat.
Then came the summer the road was closed for the new bypass, and the traffic stopped altogether. Mrs Ferrier sat out on the step with her tea going cold and said the cat had stopped looking at the road. Instead she sat with her back to the sand and her tail tucked round her feet, facing the shop door, the way a cat faces someone she means to keep.
So you see, boy, the road was never the thing she was waiting for. The Halloran lorry came back in October, as lorries do, and the driver found the shop lit and the kettle warm. He never did learn why the cat wouldn't come down off the wall to meet him. Mrs Ferrier knew. The cat had been watching the door all along.
