Stylised hare line drawing

Black and grey · Flash

A seated hare faces upward with long ears, a curved back and one raised front paw, drawn in bold black outline. Grey wash fills parts of the ears, belly and haunch, and the tail and paw end in spiral curls. The design is centred on a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Morag, you will think I have gone soft on the rock, but I have a hare for company now. It came up the goat track the week after the boat stopped coming, and it sits on the flat stone below the lamp room every evening at dusk, ears up as if it is listening for the bell from the mainland. Ewan says it is only after the clover in the lee of the wall. He may be right. Still, it lifts one front paw whenever the beam swings round, as though it were waving the light on its way.

I have been feeding it the crusts I meant for the gulls. The grey on its ears is the colour of the sky before rain, and its tail ends in a curl like the sea turning back on itself at the foot of the cliffs. I tried to draw it on the back of the tide tables, but my lines came out stiff. Its outline is one unbroken stroke, which I think is why it looks so sure of itself.

Last Thursday the fog came in at four and did not lift for two days. Ewan wound the clockwork by hand all night, cursing the gears, and I stood at the gallery rail listening for the horn to answer something out there. On the second morning the hare was back on the flat stone, wet to the shoulder, staring at the water. When the mist finally thinned, a fishing smack was tacking in toward the skerry, close enough that I could see the man at the tiller. The hare did not move until the boat turned away.

I do not know what it knew. Ewan says hares have their own business and I should mind mine. But I have started leaving the lamp on a little longer at dusk, and I have stopped minding that he calls it my hare. Write back soon and tell me how Mam's hip is. Love, Isla
