Leaves and rose bud on the neck
Botanical · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A close black and white photograph of a woman's neck and lower face, showing a tattoo of several leaves on stems with a rose bud and partly visible rose at the side of the neck. The linework is fine and the leaves are lightly shaded with grey, giving them soft dimension. The composition is tightly cropped, with the tattoo running diagonally across the neck and the photo softly focused around the edges.

Shift up, all of you, and mind the drip off the awning, because the rain has come in sideways off the river again and it will not wait for a story. Now. Who wants the one about the rose that grew on the back wall behind the fish stalls?

There was a gardener called Iris Malloy who kept a single climbing rose on the wall of the old Corn Exchange. Every morning she pruned it with a knife her father had sharpened on the step, and every morning the market men cursed her for dropping thorns in the gutters. She said a rose gives you what you ask for slowly. Leaves first, then the stem, then the bud, and the bloom only after the weather has done its worst.
The winter the bridge flooded, the wall cracked and the rose came away from the bricks in a long green rope. Iris sat on an upturned crate in the rain and tied it back one leaf at a time, counting them under her breath so she would not cry. Seven leaves on the left stem, five on the right, and one bud no bigger than a thumbnail that she refused to cut. Men came past with their barrows and offered her tea and advice. She gave them neither.
By spring the wall was dry and the bud had opened, pale and stubborn, the colour of a wet shell. Iris still sits at the end of this row on Thursdays, though she is ninety now and the rose belongs to the weather. So when you buy your mackerel this week, look up at that wall. If a leaf is still hanging there, it's one she counted. Now off you go before the rain takes the rest of the afternoon.
