Black and grey realism wolf head tattoo with smoky swirls across a woman's shoulder and upper back.

Wolf head tattoo on a shoulder

Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic wolf head with shaded fur and light eyes sits on the shoulder, with smoky swirling linework extending up and across the upper back. The shading is soft and detailed on the wolf, while the smoke elements use bolder outlines and lighter grey washes. The dark background keeps the focus on the tattoo against the skin.

Dear Tom, The smoke in the Crown Ballroom has got so thick this winter that Mr Abbott strung muslin across the balcony rail, and it only turns the haze the colour of weak tea. Last Saturday a grey wolf came up out of it during the last waltz. Nobody else saw him. I was counting couples on the sprung floor, and when I looked again there was a dog-sized shape sitting by the orchestra pit with his head raised, watching the smoke roll off the clarinet bell as though it owed him money.

He did not bark or come nearer. He only stood when the band struck up the old foxtrot for the final dance and walked along the edge of the floor like a night watchman checking the locks. The dancers parted for him without knowing why. Mrs Pickering put her hand on her heart and said it was only the draught off the windows.

On Sunday I went back alone with a torch. The floor was empty and chalked with the ghosts of footwork, and pale threads of smoke had curled into the corner by the fire door, shaped like the flicks of a tail. I sat on the piano stool and waited. At half past eleven the smoke gathered, lifted and drifted out through the broken pane, and the wolf's eyes showed in it for one moment, light as the gas mantles, before the cold took them.

I have not told Mr Abbott. He would only sell the place to a man who wants it for bingo. Come home at Easter and dance with me, and bring your good shoes, because I think the wolf wants to see whether we still remember the steps. Love, Nell
