Leopard head with flowers on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A leopard's head wears a jewelled headpiece with pearl strands, crescent and oval gems, and sits among orange and red flowers. Below it, a red fleur-de-lis is set inside an oval frame edged with white dots. The bold black outlines and solid fills give the leopard's fur, eyes and muzzle depth, and the composition is shown twice side by side in the same photo.

Nobody at Cold Harbour Farm knew where the leopard had come from, only that she walked the rows of the lower orchard at dusk as if she had paid for them. Mrs Tully's boys saw her first, sitting between the quince trees with a string of white pearls looped twice round her neck and a silver crescent pinned above her brow. She did not run when they shouted. She looked at them the way a magistrate looks at a poor witness.

The orchard was failing that year. The apples had set small, the rain had come late, and the men from the cider house had begun to talk of selling the land. Tully's youngest, Ada, was nine and not afraid of much. She carried a basket of windfalls to the wall each evening and left it there, and each morning the basket came back empty, with a sprig of red geranium tucked under the handle, picked from the dead strip by the well.
On the last evening of summer the leopard lay down beside the basket and waited. Ada sat with her, and neither of them spoke. When the moon came up over the hop garden, the leopard rose, pressed her muzzle into the child's palm, and walked to the old pear tree at the bottom of the field. She scraped at the earth with one forepaw. Under the roots lay a tin box stamped with a lily-shaped mark, and inside it a deed their grandfather had buried and forgotten, showing the orchard was theirs by a right nobody had ever bothered to write down.
By morning the pears were swelling on the branches, and the leopard was gone. Ada wore the pearls to school for a term, until her mother made her take them off. She said they had only been lent, and that was the end of it.
