The ferry was late again, so I have had time to finish the blanket you asked about. I dyed the wool with the last of the madder from the back shed and stitched the spots on by hand, the way Mam taught us, though my spots came out more like eyes than spots. Mr Gallacher from the shop says they look like someone is watching him from the wool, and he has bought two.

The lilies were the hard part. The orange ones by the chapel wall had all gone to seed by June, so I walked to the old manse garden where Mrs Tulloch keeps the pink Turk's caps in a bed nobody else tends. She let me take three stems on the condition that I bring back bulbs in autumn. I wrapped them in a wet tea towel and carried them across the machair with the wind trying to take my hat, and by the time I reached the cottage the petals had gone soft at the edges, but the stems held.

I would like to tell you the night I sewed them on was calm. It was not. The generator coughed out at nine, and I finished by the light of a paraffin lamp, with the spotted wool over my knees like a leopard lying in long grass. When I looked up, a lily had come open on the table where I had left the rest, so I pinned it to the corner and called it finished.

Come home at Christmas if the boat allows. Bring your good scissors. The blanket is for the bed in the back room, and I think you should be the one to sleep under it.
