By three the corridor lights had dropped to their night setting, and the only sound on Ward 7 was the drip counter ticking in bay two. I had been on nights for six weeks and still read every handover twice, because the day team wrote in a hurry and Mrs Pryce in bed four had been moved twice without anybody telling me where her notes had gone.

She found me at the station, awake when she should have been sleeping. "You're the one who writes on the board," she said, nodding at the corner of the whiteboard where I'd scrawled the words beside the bed plan, small and crooked, because that was what my mother used to say whenever a thing was out of my hands. Mrs Pryce tapped the marker against her teeth. "My Dennis said that about the Wednesday bins. Never once did he let one be." Then she told me about the gulls that used to lift off the gasworks roof every morning at half five, how Dennis would stand at the back door with his tea and count them out loud.

At dawn she asked me to open the window, so I did. Three birds crossed the car park light, low at first, then higher, their wings dipping in and out like a hand writing something it wasn't sure of. She watched them until they were gone over the rooftops. "There," she said. "Off they go."

I wiped the board clean and stood there with the marker, not writing anything. Then I drew three small marks above the bed plan, one after another, and left the rest of the morning empty.
