Fine line script reading let it go on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a small handwritten script phrase, reading let it go, in thin black linework on smooth skin at the side of the torso. The letters are slanted upwards from left to right with light, even strokes and some variation in line weight. The black fabric of a bra sits at the top edge of the frame, and the soft, pale background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Marguerite, the wireless in the back of the cab is still playing the shipping forecast when I finally find your old address in Whitby, and the woman who answers the door says you left for the coast in March with a suitcase full of blue ink and no forwarding address. I stand on the step with the rain running off my hat and think about the afternoon you pressed that pencil stub into my hand and told me to write down everything I was too proud to say. I never did. I kept the pencil, though, and I kept the way you tipped your head when you thought I was being foolish.

The landlady says you painted the front door green before you went and that the neighbours were scandalised. I laughed out loud on the step, which made her close the door a little. Then I walked to the harbour wall and sat where we used to eat chips out of newspaper, and the gulls were so bold I had to shout at them, and I realised I had been carrying a grudge up and down the M1 for eleven months when the whole thing had been a matter of two words I could never bring myself to say.
So I am writing them now, in a hand that slopes uphill like a boat climbing a swell. Let it go, Marguerite. Let the green door go, and the argument, and the stupid train we missed. I am posting this to the harbour office in case anyone there knows where you have gone, and I am going home to sleep for the first time since spring.
