The tattoo shows the words let it be in a thin, handwritten script, with three small birds in flight above the lettering. The linework is single-needle thin and in solid black ink with no shading. The close-up photograph shows warm skin with the tattoo placed on the side of the body, against a dark shadowed edge on the left.

Each morning before the whistle, three grey birds came down onto the slag heap above the village and sat in a row on the broken wall of the old chapel. Nobody knew their name. Children counted them and lost count. When the pit foreman, a hard man called Dacre, tried to frighten them off with a sling of stones, he hit nothing, and the birds only lifted and settled again further along the wall.

Tom watched them through the kitchen window and talked to them, the way he had talked to the pit ponies before they were sold. Nessa heard him say, "Go on then, let it be," over and over, as though the birds were a debt he could not pay. One February morning the frost was so thick the slag glittered like sugar, and Tom walked up the heap with his hands empty.

When Nessa followed him she found him sitting on the chapel wall with the birds beside him. He said nothing for a long while. Then he stood, brushed the frost from his coat, and started back down the path, and the birds rose together, wheeling over the headgear and away towards the sea. Tom never went near the shaft again. Nessa said it was the first time she had seen him sleep through a night since the roof came in.
