Dear Ivy, I have been meaning to write since the Saturday the band lost their drummer and the ballroom at the Palais went quiet between numbers. Mr Okonedo asked me to paint the new name board over the cloakroom, and I am not much of a sign-writer, so I used a pencil first and drew the same flower over and over in the margin until my hand stopped shaking. Five round petals, one unbroken line, the way your mother drew the cherry blossom on the tea caddy. You will laugh, but I could not lift the pen off the paper once without losing the shape.

Dorothy from the ticket booth saw the sketches and asked which of the girls had been sitting for me. Nobody had. I told her it was a flower I made up, which is a lie, because I have seen it on the back of your letter from Margate every time you signed off with a little loop.

Mr Okonedo liked it so much he wants it stencilled on the ticket stubs for the Christmas dance. I said yes before I thought about how many stubs that is, roughly four thousand, and how many nights I will be standing on a ladder doing it. Still, I am glad of the work. It keeps my hands busy and my head off the question of whether you are coming back up north in March.
