Lettering · Back · Mixed · Photo

A freshly done tattoo on a person's upper back, covered with clear plastic wrap. It shows a red awareness ribbon outlined in black, with a black linework shape behind it and script lettering reading Save the Race across the top. The linework is bold and the red fill is solid, with the black lettering sitting clearly above the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Doreen Pask had painted the banner herself, the night before the last meeting at Hollin Downs, on a bedsheet pegged across the bar yard. Save the Race, she'd written in curly black capitals, and then sat back on an upturned crate with a tin of red emulsion, wondering what a ribbon ought to look like on cloth that had already been washed a dozen times.

The stewards had given the course until Michaelmas. Nobody in the parish believed the county would really close it, but the letters kept arriving on the mat at the Red Lion, and Doreen kept reading them out loud as though volume might change the figures. Her grandson Tom ran the tote hut and said the crowd would be thin. He was wrong. By two o'clock the rails were three deep with farmhands, a Brownie troop, and a man in a waxed jacket who had walked in from Cleeve with a spaniel under each arm.

The last race was a handicap over a mile and a half, six runners, and the favourite was a grey mare called Lantern Girl who had never once in her life been asked to hurry. Doreen watched from the stand with her hand flat on the bedsheet in her lap. The mare came off the final bend with nothing in front of her but the wind and a stripy-shirted boy in the saddle who looked as surprised as anyone.

Afterwards the stewards read the banner, then read it again, and nobody said a word about the sheet. Tom counted the takings twice. The total came to £412, which was not enough, but was more than they'd had at breakfast, and Doreen tied the bedsheet to the rail for next year.
