Pink ribbon and script word on shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo

A close photograph of a tattoo on the upper shoulder and back of a person wearing a black top, with a car and building visible in the background. A pink awareness ribbon is drawn with thin black outlines and soft pink shading, and the script word mom sits in a looping heart-shaped line to its left. The composition is tightly cropped on the tattoo, with the skin tone and light showing the ink clearly.

The ferryman would not take the girl across the Tessel until she told him what she carried, and she had only a length of pink silk folded small in her fist. Her brothers had gone over the border at the spring melt. The guards at the stone bridge passed no one without a name written in their ledger, and she had none to give.

The ferryman turned the silk over in his hands. Her mother had cut it from a dress that no longer fit anyone in the valley, then stitched one word along its edge in black thread before she left for the mills in the east. The letters were looped round inside a heart so the needle would never lose its way. 'That is no name,' he said. 'That is what a child calls the one who waits.' He poled her over anyway, because the river had never cared what the guards wrote down.

On the far bank the captain unrolled his ledger and ran his finger down a column of blank lines. She held the silk up to the lamp. He read the word twice, then folded his pen away. His own mother had sewn his collar, he said, and he had not seen her in eleven years. He stamped the girl's pass with the mark for travellers who were expected.

She walked the north road with the silk tied to her wrist. Behind her the heart of thread stayed bright in the dusk, and ahead the road bent towards the hills where her brothers were waiting at the first inn.
