Pink ribbon with Faith, Hope and Love on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A pink awareness ribbon is shown in a shaded, three-dimensional style, with the words Faith, Hope and Love in black script across its loops and tails. The ribbon has grey shadowing along its edges that gives it depth against the skin. It fills the centre of the frame on a forearm, with a plain background at the left and a dark area at the right.

Before the bells, Mrs Oldham came down the lane with a basket on her arm and a hunger she never mentioned. Tom Greaves had been up since three, shaping loaves in the back room where the oven ticked as it cooled. He handed her the heel of the morning batch, the way his mother had handed it to anyone who knocked at that hour.

She had three ribbons, each cut from the same length of pink silk, and she laid them out on the floured board. One said Faith, one said Hope, and one said Love, the letters worked in black thread by a hand that had done it for years. "Which one goes on the loaf," she asked, "and which one goes on the wait?" Tom said he knew bread, not ribbon. She said that was the trouble with bread. It gets eaten, and nobody keeps the bag.
He tied the Love round the first loaf anyway, because his hands wanted something to do. The knot slipped. He tied it again. By the time the sun came red over the mill roof, the loaf wore a pink loop at its middle with the words facing outwards, and she carried it off under her arm without a word of thanks, which was how he knew she would come back.
She came every Thursday for a month, and every Thursday he tied a fresh ribbon. On the last morning she brought the three back folded flat and left Faith on the board. "Keep that one," she said. "It's the only one that goes round without help." Tom slipped it over his wrist, where it sat loose, and the oven went on ticking as the light came up the lane.
