She had come for ferns, the fine dark kind that grew only in the glasshouse behind the old fish hall, and she had come because her sister had written a letter that said only the words Come and weigh it yourself. Ruth had been weighing things all her life: flour, grief, the lies people told at the rent counter. The scales in the letter were not the scales she knew. They were drawn in the margin, an arch sitting on a bar, and the arch was crowded with leaves and curling tendrils so tight that the paper had nearly torn.
She found the glasshouse door propped open with a crate of leeks. Inside, the ferns hung from the iron ribs in exact pairs, each frond answering its partner across the aisle, and at the far end her sister stood on a stool with a pair of brass pans in her hands, one heavy with soil and the other empty. "Balance it," she said, "and I will tell you what Father left us."
Ruth set the sweet peas in the empty pan. The beam rose, hung, and settled, and for the first time in years nothing in the room leaned toward either of them.
