Lifted pickup truck on a calf

Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A lifted pickup truck with large knobbly off-road tyres is tattooed across the calf, seen from the front three-quarter angle. The shading is smooth and realistic, with reflections on the bodywork and deep shadows in the tyre treads. Muted green and teal tints sit over the grey shading, and a small orange light is visible on the front of the truck.

The road over Carrick Fell had been shut since Tuesday, and by Thursday the drifts stood higher than the gateposts at the Drover's Rest. Maud Holloway had kept the inn alone since her husband took the lambing money down to Kendal and never came back. She had four loaves left, a cellar with one barrel, and a lamp in the window that she lit each night more from habit than hope.

The truck came up the valley at dusk. It was a pickup, green as pond water, sat high on black knobbled tyres as tall as a man, and a small amber light glowed on its grille like an ember somebody had forgotten to blow out. The driver stepped down with snow in his collar and asked only where the lane to Hollin Farm lay, because the midwife's boy had a fever and the doctor could not reach him.

She pointed him up the white track, and he went. He came back before midnight with the boy wrapped in a horse blanket and the midwife's bag on his knee. Three times that night the truck went out and returned, its tyres chewing through the drifts like a dog through rope, and each time it carried someone warm to the fire. Maud fed them all from the four loaves and the one barrel, and somehow the bread did not run out.

By first light the engine had gone quiet. The driver was nowhere to be seen, the boy was asleep in the settle, and the cellar held a barrel still full to the bung. Maud walked out to the gate, and the only tracks in the snow were her own. Above the fell, a small amber light went over the ridge and was gone.
