Yellow hot rod and red roses on an arm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A yellow vintage hot rod with a visible engine and dark wheels sits at the centre of the design, with its bold black outlines. Two red roses with dark green leaves frame the car on the right and above it. The shading is simple and flat, with small highlights, and the colour is bright and saturated against the skin.

The yellow Ford lived in the bottom car park of Hollins House, under the orange sodium lights, and Ray swore it had been a hearse before he got his hands on it. Nobody believed him, but nobody argued either, because the flathead engine sat on the bonnet like a polished wedding cake and started on the third turn of the handle every time.

My nan lived on the ninth floor and watched us from her kitchen window with a tea towel over one shoulder. She said red roses on a motor were a waste of good sense, then sent me down the stairs with a flask of tea and a slice of Victoria sponge for Ray, which she had never once done for anybody else in the block.

The night the council came to tow it, Ray had the bonnet up and a spanner in his fist. He told the man in the orange jacket he'd only be a minute. Half the stairwell came out to help us push the car up the ramp by hand, and the wheels turned slow in the dark while someone's radio played Motown from a window above.

Ray never drove it again after that summer. He polished the yellow paint every Sunday until the tower's shadow reached the kerb, then parked it back under the bin store roof with a sheet over the engine, like something he meant to set free one day and never quite did.
