Light bulb with quote on a limb

Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo

A light bulb with a glowing orange filament sits inside a black outline, with the words BABE YOU TURN ME ON arched above it in black capitals. Two green sprigs curve up either side of the bulb, and the glass is shaded in soft grey. Part of another colourful tattoo is visible at the lower edge, and a black leather chair fills the background.

Dear Vera,

You will never guess what Len did on Saturday. The whole of Crossley Street went dark at half past seven, just as the Co-op was pulling its shutters down, and the men from the works came out with their torches like a funeral procession. Len was up the lamp post outside the Palais before anyone had found the matches. He came down with his hands black to the wrist and a look on his face I haven't seen since the Coronation.

He's been fixing the dance hall sign all week. Mr Hollis wanted something to shift the crowds off the Wednesday pictures, so Len painted a bulb on the board with a bit of ivy curling up either side, then lettered the words across the top in black capitals: BABE YOU TURN ME ON. I told him it was rude. He said it was the truest thing he could think of to put over a door, and Mr Hollis paid him in cash, which settled the matter.

The power came back at nine. The first thing I saw from the kitchen window was that bulb, the proper one he'd wired up that afternoon, with its little orange filament glowing out over the square. Mrs Ainsworth from number four clapped her hands. The rest of the street stood about in their coats looking foolish and pleased with themselves.

I'm writing because I wanted you to know I'm not cross any more about the rent money. Come up at Easter. I'll leave the porch light on, and I'll tell you the rest of it when you're sat by the fire.

Your loving sister, June
