The kiln at Hollis and Sons had been cold since Tuesday, and the last order for the lamp company in Leeds still needed forty globes blown before the lorry came at six. Dot Marsh took a pipe from the rack and did not look at the clock, because the clock had stopped meaning anything to anyone on the night shift years ago.

Under the bench, in the crate of broken cullet, she found the test bulb the boy Ray had made in his first month. He had not painted it, only scratched lines into the inside with a dentist's pick, rays fanning up from a low round sun, and then packed the hollow with little stippled clouds he had ground from chalk. Mr Hollis had called it rubbish and binned it. Dot held it up under the bare bulb hanging over the bench, and the whole thing lit like a window onto a morning in February.

She wrapped it in the Express and carried it home on the 16 bus, past the shuttered glassworks and the chippy with its grille half down. Ray was forty-one now and drove a van for a removals firm in Kidderminster, and she had not seen him since the works closed. She set the bulb in the front window of her flat, where the streetlamp came through, and switched on nothing at all. At five, when the grey came up over the car park, the sun inside the glass caught the light first, and she stood there in her dressing gown until the rays had crossed the whole room.
