Lighthouse and clouds on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A tall, striped lighthouse with a lantern room sits at the centre of the design, with its base cropped at the bottom of the frame. Swirling cumulus-style clouds and rolling waves fill the background, with soft gradients and smooth shading that give the lighthouse volume. The tattoo is in black and grey only, photographed from the side on a bare arm against a plain wall, with a person in a grey striped top beside it.

Nobody on the coast could say when the tower had first been banded red and white, only that the lantern had never once gone dark. Fishermen said the sea kept a tally of every night it was lit, and that it collected in drownings whenever the count fell short. Her grandmother had told her this as a girl. She had not believed a word of it, but she trimmed the wick anyway.
By midnight the wind had curled the clouds above the gallery into great scrolls, like a wave that had stopped halfway to breaking. Below, the water heaved grey against the rocks, and somewhere out in it she heard oars. She kept feeding the flame and turning the brass until her palms blistered. The oars came nearer, stopped, and a man's voice called her name across the water, flat and tired, the way voices carry over a bay.
She did not go down. She poured the last of the oil and held the light high until the sound drifted past the reef and into the harbour mouth. At first light she walked the shingle and found the boat drawn up dry above the tideline, the post bag still tied to the thwart. Her husband was asleep in the kitchen with his boots on, having come home by the cliff path the evening before, and he had not left the house since. She took the bag inside and set the kettle on, and the tally, she supposed, was whole again.
